What is Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC)?
Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a disorder that causes tumors to form on any organ in the body including but not limited to the brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, liver and lungs. People with TSC often develop epilepsy, autism, learning and behavioral problems. Currently, there is no cure for TSC, but on-going research will not only pave the way for treatments and therapies for TSC, but for numerous other diseases as well, including cancer, diabetes, autism and epilepsy. In fact, TSC is the largest known genetic cause of epilepsy and the second largest identifiable genetic cause of autism. Approximately 1 million people worldwide are known to have TSC, with 50,000 in the U.S.. At least 2 children born each day will have TSC. There are also many undiagnosed cases of the disorder due to its obscurity and sometimes mild symptoms.
